In France, the cantonal election can elect councilors.
The term of office of general counsel is 6 years. The councils are renewed by half every three years. The last district elections were held on 9 and 16 March 2008 and the next will take place on 20 and 27 March 2011.
These elections are held, since 1998, the same day as municipal and regional elections. It will not be the case in 2011. The mandate of councilors elected in March 2011 exceptionally expire in March 2014. The councilors will be elected so for a term reduced to 3 years.
Act No. 2010-1563 of 16 December 2010 local government reform envisages the elimination of general counselors and advisers and their replacement by regional advisers territorial elected county level who will sit in the two assemblies first election of this kind to be held in 2014.
